Hythe-Brockenhurst 12 miles, quiet roads and forest tracks

The crossing from Southampton Town Quay to Hythe is well worth taking for fantastic views of the harbour, and if you've got time to spare in Hythe you can visit the worlds oldest train pier! Details of crossings can be found on the Hythe Ferry website. Quiet roads take you through Hythe as far as Denny Wood campsite. From the campsite, the route follows forest tracks south through attractive woodland, and joins the B3055 to take you into Brockenhurst. See our online mapping or download the New Forest Map for details of the Forest tracks. Alternatively call the New Forest Visitor Centre on tel: 023 80 282269.

Brockenhurst to Bransgore - 8 miles, quiet roads and forest tracks

The route leaves Brockenhurst on the B3055 towards Sway, and re-joins the Forest Track system westwards towards Holmsley. Take care crossing the A35 near Holmsley, and continue towards Bransgore using the forest track and quiet roads. See our online mapping for details of the forest tracks.

NCR23 sign Cowes to Sandown, Isle of Wight. ** 11 miles, easy

The easiest 'coast to coast' ride in the country uses former railway paths to take you from one side of the island to another. Starting just south of Cowes the route takes you alongside the river Medina to Newport. After a brief on-road section, you rejoin the path at Shide to travel through delightful countryside to the outskirts of Sandown with its miles of sandy beaches. Download route description sheet.

Test Valley Way**  5 miles each way, off road, easy

Running between Stonymarsh and Stockbridge, this disused railway track provides a safe and flat surface for cycling. As this trail is linear it is particularly suitable for families with children. The trail runs along the eastern bank of the River Test passing through Horsebridge with its attractive weirs and renovated station house. Stockbridge Common Nature Reserve is one of several wildlife havens that can be discovered en route. Further information and leaflet from Hampshire County Council.

Meon Valley Cycle trail 10 miles, (inc. 7 off road), strenuous

This is a challenging trail following the Downs of Hampshire, your effort well rewarded with stunning views from Butser Hill. Further info is available from Hampshire County Council.

NCR2 sign Hayling Billy Trail** (5 miles from Havant)

The delightful off-road cycling trail starts at the railway station in Havant. Following the railway path southwards you arrive at Langstone Bridge, where we suggest you get off and walk along the footpath. Once on Hayling Island, you're back on the former railway path, which takes you to the Southern end of the island, where you can explore the sea front and town, or take a ferry across Langstone Harbour to Portsmouth and get a train back to Havant. Download leaflet from Hampshire CC.
